The Hawaii doctor now charged with attempted murder had taken his wife to celebrate her birthday when he allegedly beat her viciously and tried to inject her with an unspecified substance, she claims in a petition for a restraining order.
Arielle Konig, 36, survived the March 24 alleged attack after she claims that her husband, 46-year-old Gerhardt Konig, tried to push her off a cliff at a 1,200 ft scenic landing spot in Oahu, Hawaii.
Gerhardt, a doctor, was arrested following a brief search later the same day.
While Honolulu police say the hike ended with Arielle sustaining critical injuries and Gerhardt making a Facetime call — covered in blood, allegedly telling his son he tried to kill her — their vacation had begun on a seemingly celebratory note.
The Maui couple had travelled to Oahu to celebrate Arielle’s birthday, according to a petition for a restraining order Arielle filed after the alleged attack.
Gerhardt had planned the weekend trip, Arielle said, and they arrived at a Waikiki hotel on March 23.
He had also planned the hike where he would eventually be accused of trying to kill Arielle, a nuclear engineer, per the petition.

On the day of the incident, Gerhardt “suggested we go on a hike at the Nu’uanu Pali Lookout,” Arielle wrote, adding that the trail “includes narrow ridge sections with steep drop-offs on both sides.”
“During the hike, I became uneasy and informed Gerhardt that I did not want to continue,” she said.
Arielle appears to have repeatedly expressed her unease with the hike, including the steep height and feeling dizzy after taking a photo on a tree.
Per the claims in the petition, Gerhardt’s alleged attack was seemingly unprompted — Arielle wanted to move away from the cliff, given her dizziness, and was attacked when she got closer to her husband.

After he allegedly tried to push her off the cliff, Gerhardt allegedly hit Arielle in the head with a rock about 10 times and bashed her face into the ground while she struggled to escape, according to a probable cause affidavit obtained by PEOPLE. He then allegedly tried to inject her with a syringe filled with an unknown substance.
Two witnesses at the scene alleged to police they saw Gerhardt attack her before fleeing the scene, per the affidavit.

A GoFundMe has been set up to assist Arielle and her children as she recovers.
The couple married in 2018, per Allegheny County court records. They share two children, 2 and 4, Arielle said in the restraining order petition.
Gerhardt is being held on $5 million bond. Court records show he is scheduled to be arraigned to enter his plea later this month. His lawyer did not respond to PEOPLE's requests for comments.
